3 Design Eras To Know

In the age of fast everything, collecting vintage furniture is a quiet rebellion. Equally, collecting vintage gives you an opportunity to create spaces with soul, substance, and a story. Here are some of the design eras making a resurgence and seem to be resonating with designers and collectors… and me!
BRUTALISM
When? 1950s–1970s
Mood: Heavy, sculptural, architectural
Why? For minimalists and maximalists alike. Stark lines and monolithic presence counterbalance the soft, fluid shapes dominating home trends.
What I’d buy:
Brutalist sideboards with faceted timber fronts
A set of Brutalist Dining chairs...
Tip: Look for handmade textures - carved wood, cast concrete, raw patinas. These are pieces that speak in volume and silhouette, not pattern.

BRAZILIAN MODERNISM
When? 1940s–1970s
Mood: Organic, sensual, deeply tactile
Why? With names like Sergio Rodrigues and Jorge Zalszupin becoming global favourites, Brazilian modernist design has moved from collector niche to mainstream design canon. This era fuses tropical materials with masterful joinery and unapologetic curves.
What I’d buy:
Sergio Rodrigues “Mole” Chair
Tip: Look for native Brazilian hardwoods like jacaranda or peroba. These pieces age beautifully and often make a room.

POSTMODERNISM 80s/90s
When? 1980s–1990s
Mood: Irreverent, ironic, sculptural
Why? Memphis design and Ettore Sottsass are names to know for this era. Collectors are leaning into this playful era. Whilst not everything is my style, the resurgence brings me pure joy. Statement chairs, irregular forms, and surreal shapes… how fun!
What I’d buy:
Willy Rizzo lacquered coffee tables - I recently came across a Willy Rizzo Console in the UK, and regret not purchasing it ever since

Collecting furniture is about finding pieces that means something to you and transcend trends in your world.
It’s not just furniture. It’s design you live with.
